Major in Classical Studies
Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Classical Studies
1. The university requirements for bachelor’s degrees as described in the Undergraduate Education section of the current catalog; 120 credits, including general elective credits, are required for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Classical Studies.
The University’s Tier II writing requirement for the Classical Studies major is met by completing any two of the following courses: CLA 400 Senior Seminar: Women in Ancient Greece and Rome; GRK 304 Plato and Sophists; GRK 311 Greek and Lyric Poetry and the Ionian world; GRK 321 Lysias and Attic Oratory; GRK 406 Senior Seminar: Aristophanes and Euripides; GRK 408 Thycydides and the Fall of Athens; LTN 306 The works of Cicero; LTN 308 Roman Comedy; LTN 311 Augustine and his age; LTN 321 The works of Ovid; LTN 406 Tacitus; LTN 408 Virgil; LTN 411 Senior Seminar: Petronius and Apuleius.
2. Requirements of the College of Arts and Letters for the Bachelor of Art degree. The completion of LTN, 224, LTN 204, LTN 221, GRK 304, or GRK 321 as referenced below satisfies the College’s requirement of second-year competency in a foreign language.

B. A capstone experience. The capstone requirement for students with a concentration in Classical Civilization and Culture is satisfied by completing CLA 499 (1 credit) taken in conjunction with a 400 level CLA course. The capstone requirement for students with a concentration in Classical Languages and Literatures is satisfied by completing LTN 499 (1 credit) or GRK 499 (1 credit) taken in conjunction with a Latin or Greek Senior Seminar.
C. Electives. An additional 9 to 12 credits in CLA, LTN GRK, ANP, HA, HST, LIN, LTN, PHL, or THR courses at the 300-400 level approved by the student’s academic advisor as needed to meet the requirement of at least 34 but not more than 40 credits in courses in the major.

for teacher certification in French and Latin.
- Disciplinary minors are also available for teacher certification in
French, Italian, and Latin.
