French Major

  1. The university requirements for bachelor's degrees as described in the Undergraduate  Education section of this catalog; 120 credit including general elective credits, are required for the Bachelor of Arts degree in French. The University's Tier II writing requirement for the French major is met by completing French 320 or 340. Those courses are referenced in item 3.a. (1) below.
  2. The requirements of the College of Arts and Letters for the Bachelor of Arts degree.

French 355 does not count toward the major.

College of Arts and Letters cognate requirements must be followed: Two cognates of 12 credits each, with at least 3 credits in the upper division. Each cognate shall be in a single discipline or thematic area. At least one of the cognates must be in a field outside the College of Arts and Letters.The University Tier II Writing requirement will be fulfilled by completion of both FRN 320 and FRN 340.

NOTE: Students wishing to earn a French Education major must apply separately for admission to the College of Education. Applications are available at the Department of Education Student Affairs Office, 134 Erickson Hall. Acceptance into the program is necessary for admission into the required Education courses.

Teacher Certification Options

- Disciplinary majors leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree are available for teacher certification in French and Latin.
- Disciplinary minors are also available for teacher certification in French, Italian, and Latin.
- Students who elect one of the disciplinary majors or one of the disciplinary minors referenced above must contact the Department of French, Classics, & Italian.
